aisyah's engagement

Went to Aisyah's engagement today. Congratssss babe!!!

Like we said, 99 more steps to the marriage/wedding.
As in Sally's words, "sabar menunggu"...whatever that means, according to istilah masing-masing ;)

-----------------

Just as I left home, my mum asked me where I was going.
So I told her Aisyah's house, and she was trying to recall who Aisyah is. I told her nevermind, she's one of my social work mates.
Then she asked, going to her house for what?
So I told her it's for Aisyah's engagement ceremony.
Then, in that particular tone of voice, she said, "Aisyah is getting engaged???"

I quickly got out of the house.

When I got home, she asked the usual question, like who's Aisyah's guy and all.
And later asked my sister and I, when are we getting engaged. (note: when, not to whom)

Which I recalled, that my mother once said that getting engaged was a waste of time and money.

Hmmmm...so the comment was weird.

And I replied, "any time also can!"

Dread awkward conversations with mum.

kids

today was the cgh child care graduation cum year end concert. went to watch the little kids put up a performance.

their performance was cute because they were unco-ordinated. haha! some of the kids danced really well!

kids are fun to play with. if only you could have kids to play with but not the responsibility of raising them. some of us feel that having nephews and nieces are enough. to raise kids, or even one kid is tough. a kid in your life would mean you have to change your roles and make the necessary adjustments. imagine not being able to go for a holiday until your kid is big enough...and having to pay for the kid! if you're working, lagi worse...work during the day and at night need to attend to your kid.

but nonetheless having kids is important. i don't want to end up like some of my patients...having no children and no one to attend to your care matters when you are old. so you are left with no choice but to go to a nursing home :( but then again, if you have kids also, if they turn out to be unfilial also jialat.

hopefully when i do have kids, my maternal instincts will make me think differently :)

f.i.sh

last night went for dinner at f.i.s.h to celebrate brother's belated birthday. this is the halal version of fish n co.
this outlet is located at tampines one level 4. inside the restaurant, there is a 2nd floor.

well, food is not that fantastic. main dishes were so-so and price is a bit expensive for the kind of food we get. the best thing about it was the salad bar which serves many different kinds of salads, including sauces. yummy!

probably will not come here again...not worth the money i guess.

of boyfriends, getting married and shelves

at the dinner table, a conversation with my parents on one night, mother asked whether i have a boyfriend. i told her if i have one, i will make a big grand announcement. mother and father will just have to wait for the day that will happen.

;)

it's been approximately a couple of weeks since i was at risk of a heart attack...after my friends kept dropping bombs on me. the bombs were specifically about getting married (note: suddenly is the keyword).

not that i'm prepared to get married at this age, i am so not!

but made me worry about my future. i guess nobody wants to be left on the shelf. but yet again, some people are just not fated to get married. in malay we call it "tak ada jodoh".

nobody can know whether they will fall in this category. as it is, birth, death and marriage are all in the hands of God. i hope and pray that i'm not in this category...not that this category is bad, but i guess it's not ideal.

in Islam we believe that to get something that you want, you will need effort + prayer.

prayer can be done, no problem...but effort...? effort takes a lot of effort (haha). many more hurdles to overcome while trying to make the effort.

organ transplant

recent events made me do some reflections, especially with regards to organ transplant.

as you all know, now Muslims in Singapore are automatically opted in the organ transplant act. you would have to sign an opt-out form otherwise.

while donating organs will save someone else's life, one other thing to consider is the emotional turmoil your family would have to face upon receiving news that you died and now they have to do an operation on you to remove your organs fo donation.

how then do you balance between the issues?

i'm still thinking about it...i still havent reached a decision.

ultimately it's a personal choice and up to invdividuals to debate between the 2 issues and to weigh the benefits and consequences.

kesepian ramadhan

seems like this year's Ramadhan seems quieter than previous years.

my brother in camp.
my dad not breaking fast at home due to increase in petrol prices, so it doesn't make sense to drive from jurong all the way to tampines to break fast.
my sister at work sometimes.

so left me and my mom.

oh well, we can carry out meaningful conversations nonetheless.

feel proud of myself for being able to drop my work once it's 5:45pm.

but i guess i have to be faster in cleaning up my shit then. haha.
too many things swept under the carpet. sheesh.

just a thought

why can't children care for their elderly parents like how they would care for their own young children?

well, one may be old and another young...but i guess at some point in time, both would have similar care needs.

but then again, if everybody is like this, then i would be out of job. hahaha.

death and dying

msw chapter training today on grief and bereavement for the 2nd part...these are sensitive issues which, i can't say i'm totally comfortable in discussing, but i'm learning how to be.

seeing and hearing people die in the hospital, and how their families are affected, made me reflect more on my life and on the lives of my loved ones. i keep thinking how i will react when one day i receive news that a loved one has died or is dying...or even if one day i find myself to be dying. as much as mentally prepared one may be, the actual response might be entirely different.

it's normal to break down and cry. to be angry and to question others (including God himself).

why?
how?
when?

just last week i had to attend to the family of a patient who suddenly died. it was quite a tragic death, i would say, despite family members knowing that the patient is already dying. the wife was extremely distressed and my colleagues had to hold her down. yes, it was that bad. makes me wonder whether i would react that way if something similar would happen to me. you can never tell...

a friend once told me that if one day her grandma would pass on, she would never be the same person again (i think she was referring to her personality). i guess in some ways she would never be the same again. it takes time to adjust to the loss of someone, especially if the person played a huge part in your life. but i believe that she would be able to go through the grief process successfully...most people are.

talking about death and dying, i do think about how i want to die. ideally, i would like to die when i'm sleeping...without any suffering. but then again, if i die in my sleep without any prior diagnosis of some kind of diesease, then it would be a coroner's case already (haha still can think about this). oh well, but bottom line is, i would prefer to die in my sleep...and not have to be a coroner's case. haha. yes, i know that it's not up to me to determine how i will die. but perhaps if i pray hard enough, God will eventually grant me a peaceful death without any suffering.

basically, to deal with a loss is to learn how to say goodbye and move on and keep the memories. sounds easy, but definitely not.

bila nak kahwin? (part 2)

someone else asked me again... "bila nak kahwin?"

and my answer this time round was, "in about 10 years' time."

i'm not kidding! like, seriously...and that is even if i manage to find a partner then. if cannot find then don't get married lor.

let me explain why i say it this way...

1) i'm so not prepared to get married now. having your own family at this point in time is really out of the world for me. i would then have to think about getting along with in-laws, paying your own household bills, behaving maturely (which currently i am so not) and being a wife (which pretty much freaks me out).

2) i have no money. well, i do but it's not enough.

3) i have other plans for the money that i have. goal 2010 will be backpacking in europe. nobody will stop me from going there! well, unless there's a very good reason why i shouldn't go. but otherwise, i'm all for it!

4) singlehood is pure bliss right now. no commitements. no strings attached. im free to do my own things.

5) my parents are not pushing me, so why should i push myself...?

there you go! hahah! hoepfully i'll become more mature (or rather desperate..?) in the future so that i'll be better prepared. haha...

pulau tekong

so...went to pulau tekong today to send off my brother for his enlistment! hahaha!

good luck, boy! hope you will survive the next 3 months. haha!

ya my mother like tai tai...with her fan while waiting for the bus to take us to the SAF ferry terminal. apparently she loves that fan bought from spain.

well, we got to tour the camp area. looks good actually...clean and spacious. i must say it's quite good living conditions lor.

anyway, saw some of the boys who have been there for some time already. all heads shaven. they look the same. all with the same skin colour already. haha...my brother will be even blacker. damn, i can't get to see him with his bald head. i think by the time 2 weeks later when he books out, his hair will grow already.

anyway, i must say that MEN (not boys, lah) in uniform generally look GOOD!

having children

we were discussing how having children basically limits your freedom.

1) have to eat up your leave when your kid falls ill. family care leave is only so many days.

2) makes travelling a hassle.

3) carry around milk powder and diapers.

4) cannot watch your favourite american drama because there's too much kissing. must wait until they're asleep then can watch.

5) pg movies only, please.

...and many other limitations.

gosh, im SO not ready to get married...let alone have kids! better cherish my single time with my freedom to travel and do things at my will!

bila nak kahwin?

OH MY GOD.

my mom just asked me. point blank. whether i have a boyfriend.

like, hello? i'm only 22. too early to get married.

that's what i told her. and she said you need time (to get to know each other) before getting married.

then she asked whether i would be willing to get to know someone if he was introduced to me by someone else.

i told her, depends, must pass my QC test first!
